iRate: DLC Exclusivity and Me… A Hate/Hate relationship
Ah the joy of gaming… You finally sit down with the latest multiplatform release and let the gaming goodness wash over you, fully enjoying everything there is on offer. But hang on a second…There are bits missing aren’t there? It’s seems you can’t enjoy the same game as your rival console owners, not because of shoddy porting issues (we’ll save that for another iRate article), but because the developer has decided to sell off their reputation to the highest bidder and screw over around half of us gamers in the process. Oh well, at least they make a bit of extra cash…
The epic war of the consoles between Sony and Microsoft (the Wii isn’t made for gamers; see ‘iRate: Wii never play it really’) seems to have descended into a tit-for-tat squabble; each company sinking to new lows by securing the exclusivity of relatively minute amounts of individual titles. Sure, the Joker maps from Batman: Arkham Asylum are only available to PS3 customers, but does Sony really think that this pathetic half-step is going to incense XBox owners into purchasing the rival console?

Review: Uncharted 2, Among Thieves
Game: Uncharted 2, Among Thieves
Format: PS3
Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: SCEE
I think it’s fair to say that Uncharted 2, Among Thieves is one of the most hyped games to hit the Playstation 3. In the build up to release, even the most newbish among us would have been hard pressed not to have seen some kind of marketing – be it billboard posters, TV ads or magazines – it’s everywhere. The question remains “does it live up to the hype?”
The game is from the 3rd person (camera over the shoulder) action-adventure genre and the basic game-play recipe boils down to climbing, jumping and swinging through various terrains. Throw into the mix a very substantial measure of gun-play and melee combat and top it off with a dash of problem solving. The end result is a tasty morsel that should appeal to most pallets.
A Very Merry Newb Christmas!
To celebrate The Newb Review's first Christmas we thought we'd put together a little seasonal article for your reading pleasure during these frosty evenings. The Newbs have gathered to give you a little insight into their own experiences and wishes with 3 festive questions. So get under a blanket or sit in front of the fireplace (not too close) with a hot cup of tea and enjoy.
Review: Uncharted, Drake’s Fortune
Name: Uncharted, Drake's Fortune
Platform: Playstation 3
Developer: Naughty Dog
Publisher: SCEE
If I was a treasure hunter, I would always be the last guy to raid the tomb and I’d get crushed by the over-sized rolling boulder. Yes, I’m often the guy following behind rather than the guy out in front. That’s why it’s probably no surprise that I have only recently played Uncharted, Drake’s Fortune but I tell you something. I’ve not come away empty handed from the experience.
I became a PS3 owner earlier this year, so I have a considerable backlog of titles to catch up on. One in particular that had been recommended to by many friends was the subject of today’s review. Spurred on by the tidal wave of excitement that currently accompanies Uncharted 2, Amongst Thieves, I decided to pick up a copy of its predecessor and see what all the fuss was about.
Review: Killzone 2
Game: Killzone 2
Format: PS3
Developer: Guerilla Games
Publisher: SCEE
I know this game has been out for a while, but with all the new DLC and the news that it will be soon released as a Platinum edition, we might just see a few new owners popping up. Also, I think its important to look at games a while into their life-span. How are they holding up after the initial release-day excitement?
The basic premise of the game is that the red-eyed Helghast are malicious space-Nazis that have been wreaking inter-stellar havoc for some time now. The ISA are the nice, shiny good guys that have had enough and take the fight to the Helghast on their home planet of Helghan. The plan is to capture their leader – Visari and give him a ruddy good telling off.
DLC Review: Killzone 2 Flash and Thunder
Game: Killzone 2 Flash and Thunder
Format: PS3
Developer: Guerilla Games
Publisher: SCEE
should start by saying that Killzone 2 was a console seller for me. It was the game that really pushed me into finally buying a Playstation 3. Up until that point I, like many, sat patiently waiting for a price drop that (so far) never came. I was content with my PS2 and would happily play the original Killzone title for hours on end.

I just stumbled across this promotion whilst browsing the Playstation website and hadn't seen it elsewhere. It seems that if you've bought (or if Santa brings you) a PSP Go, simply by downloading a particular theme, you can qualify for a free copy of Either Motorstorm: Arctic Edge, Assassin's Creed, Blood Lines or Gran Turismo
