Paul Taylor: A Path Into The Games Industry
Way back in the post-millennial haze of 2003, I was at college and Ian (co-owner of Mode 7 Games) had just graduated. Ian told me that he was making a game, that it was something to do with sword-fighting and that he needed some music for it. I complied, willingly, as I’d always wanted to do a game soundtrack.
We had a development meeting in Ian’s flat: I remember it especially well as it was a bizarre collection of Ian’s friends who had been formed into a loose-knit indie game dev team. I’m the only survivor of those days!
THQ announce Red Faction 4, Saints Row 3 all in 2012
Red Faction 4 is due to be out before April 2011. The currently unnamed sequel has been moved forward to capitalise on the popularity of the previous game and provide THQ with better financial reads in their quarterly reviews next year. Despite its release date being pushed forward, instead of back, there is still an air of doubt surrounding the release date, so don’t expect anything concrete until early next year. On the positive side, the developer has promised “robust online gameplay and increased environmental destruction”.
Homefront is another title that came up in the report. This title, based in 2027 inside a North Korea-occupied United States, is a first person shooter from the same development studio that brought us Frontlines: Fuel of War (Kaos Studios). This will be a triple format release on Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC.
News: Darksiders’ War on Tearing has Ended
Darksiders is the awesome Zelda-esque game from THQ that released on January 5th to universally great reviews. However, one of the few knocks to the game was that the XBOX 360 version had a lot of obvious, and almost impossible to ignore, screen tearing*.

Headlines of 2010

Lavalampbamboo takes a look forward in time and has a crack at predicting the big headlines of this year.
DISCLAIMER: Any resemblance to actual headlines are entirely coincidental, but would also be entirely awesome.
Half Life 2: Episode 3 is finally released in July, and the reason for the delay is made clear: the game is exactly as long as the production time, with around 23,880 hours worth of gameplay. Notable sequences include constructing a supercollider using the gravity gun and waiting for an INCREDIBLY long lift. Critics are upset with the conclusion of the game... it turns out Gordon had dreamt the whole thing on the train ride into Black Mesa.

And The Winner Is…
So, the final votes have been tallied and after several arduous arguments, a final conclusion has been drawn regarding our Game of the Year. In an unprecedented move, one game has stood head and shoulders above the competition in the eyes of the writers here at The Newb Review. This title has not only impressed us immensely since release, it has received over twice the votes of any other nominee. Remember to have your say in the comment boxes below or in The NewbReview forum (link at the top of the page). So, without any further gilding the lily, and with no more ado, we present The Newb Review Game of the Year Award to…
The Newb Review Game of the Year 2009!
No-one can deny that it has been a fantastic year for gaming. Whether you happen to be casual or hardcore; a PC, console or even handheld gamer; the market has been rife with great titles that cater to all. Here at the NewbReview office the arguments about Game of the Year have been frequent and all too often ended in bloodshed. Thus, we thought it prudent to set up a voting system to cease this fighting before the more boisterous contributors begin to bring weapons to their arguments (looking at you Kamiza!)
