100 Ideas: B(r)ack(et) in Action!

The 100 Ideas are going splendidly.  We have loads of people volunteering their input on the 100 Ideas forum found here.

We’re approaching the end, so make sure you visit the forum and voice your opinions before the decklists are set in stone.  All 100 decks have been started which shows an incredible effort on the part of the community!

This milestone means one thing though.  We have to start looking at the next segment of our journey.  I have to set up the brackets for this tournament.  Remember that the tournament is divided into Marvel and DC Universes.  There are 40 DC decks and 60 Marvel decks (well, 58 with 2 Hellboy decks).  Once a champion is decided for each side, there will be a showdown of the Universes. Council Update for 4/17

Hey gang – sorry for last week’s lack of update. We started pulling it together, then it got bumped back due to some standing questions.

+ As you may have seen, Patrick has posted the latest DSM-2 update here. It’s time to vote on Scott Free’s keyword! Lots of thematically good options, so think carefully.

+ And once you’ve cast your virtual ballot, don’t let your voting hand get too cold. On Monday, we’ll announce the process for voting for the new council! Start thinking about who should lead us into the next 4 months (May – August), but hold off on posting your nominees, there is a specific format we’ve designed for nominating people. This format will make it easier for us to tally nominees AND less likely that the nominee thread will break off into distracting splinter discussions (as you all know it easily can do).

+ With the new council coming in a couple of weeks, one of the temporary council’s final actions will be to poll the community on the Ban/Errata vibe. Not that the temp council would take any action on it at this point, but it would make for a strong recommendation for the incoming council. We’ll tell you what our thoughts are on it, then let you take it from there. More on that AFTER the council nominations have begun (we don’t want to distract from that important process).

Council Update for 4/3

It took us a bit longer to get it out the door than we thought, but Patrick’s DSM-2 post is now up! Be sure to vote for your favorite team. Right now, New Gods are stealing the show, but its early, so you can still turn the tide if you disagree.

Here’s what else we’ve been working on:

+ The Council is discussing aspects of bans and errata.

Before addressing any particular cards or interactions, we are trying to come up with a policy for this (or future) councils to apply going forward. We are trying to formulate our understanding of the ban and errata policy used by UDE, as both a starting point for our policy and as a reference for players.

From there, we are figuring out how that policy deserves to be modified in an era without UDE and their official expansions—the impact of design constraints and official tournaments, for example. Once we have a comprehensive policy for going forward, we will be able to post it so that players and TOs can provide input or implement it themselves should they see fit. And finally, we plan to discuss how aggressively/actively the council itself should be implementing that policy.

Once we have answers to those questions, we’ll be able to weigh in on community issues like Blink and the recent Overload threads. We know that some players wanted faster input on these issues, but in the end, we felt that it was in everyone’s best interest to reason out a policy first, rather than jump into the issue before we’d fully considered thing. Expect updates as we answer each question.

+ Voting for the new council.

We’ve almost got this worked out, so we’ll spill a little of what we’re thinking. This temp council should be replaced by a real one no later than May 1st (less than a month away!). Very soon we’ll announce the nomination/voting process. We also think the following guidelines should be in place:

– Voting should take place every 3 months.
– Council members MUST check in to the council area at least every 48 hours. If you don’t have the time to committ to that, you should decline nominations until you have the time.
– The council MUST post a weekly update to all three sites. Missing a week a month is acceptable. Missing two weeks or more a month is not.

So – what will the council’s duties be? There are a lot of bases a council can cover, but we feel the overall mission is:

1. Making sure the current player base is engaged and having fun! Fan sets, OP, contests, articles, interviews, etc. Help facilitate player projects and support active players where you can.

2. Grow the player base. How do we reach out to the community? Develop strategies to entice the new player.

That’s a lot, and it can’t all be done by one council, but as long as we keep forward momentum, we should be able to keep this game around for a long, long time…
