So I have decided to see if we can drum up a little daily discussion with the addition of a new “Card of the Day” feature. I’ll be looking at Vs. System TCG cards; old and new and weighing up the pros and cons. The cards I pick will be random – some good, some bad, but all designed to get you talking.
Today I’m looking at a new card from Marvel Universe – Death of a Dream. I decided to take a look at this because it’s currently in a decklist I’m working on for the new Bring Your Own Team format, and I’d not used it up until now. (I’ve added it to a Darkseid’s Elite resource disruption deck that looks to kill guys with Kanto on turn six.)
The first thing about this card it’s standard ability is pretty amazing for uncommon. Resource replacement is great. Unrestricted resource replacement is fantastic. Most abilities of this ilk are tempered by the fact that you can only replace a non team-up resource. DoaD is not handicapped in this way. The exhaustion is not a massive cost to pay, especially with the likes of Speed Queen. Being able to potentially replace two resources could prove vital in a lot of games, none more so than in a Bring Your Own Team event. There’s an Inhumans only “Quickfate” decklist out there that would hate to lose two resources in that way. Another popular deck is the New Brotherhood, and losing two copies of the signature card could prove to be game breaking in that match-up.
In summary, I would say that Death of a Dream is a fantastic card in just about every format (Random Punks legal as well!). What’s your take on the card? My Rating: 4.5/5
I actually don’t rate this card quite as highly as Steve, but I still think it’s pretty excellent. For me the real attraction comes from it being uncommon, whereas most previous similar cards have been rare. It also has the ability to hit Team-Ups which is especially handy.
I guess my problems with it are the same as I would have for any similar card such as have a blast: It is dead against some opposition, and the cost of exhausting characters can be surprisingly high for some decks. On the good side it can hit any face up resource and not just locations/ongoing plot twists, and of course it doesn’t cost cards out of your hand.
In a Darkseid deck it is perfect of course, providing just what he needed to wipe out a resource row, so I think that Steve’s rating may reflect his experience with that card in that deck.
I’d give it a 4/5 I think. It’s a good card when you need that kind of effect, and really shines in decks built to take advantage of it, but otherwise Have a Blast certainly didn’t appear in all decks that could play it, so you’ll need to think a little about the decks you expect to face to make the most of it.
Would this card negate the effect of a non-ongoing plot twist?
