Midnight launches have been a feature of gaming for a long time. They are occasionally portrayed as events for the hardest of the hardcore, and as such many people who might enjoy such a launch never give themselves the opportunity to experience one. Your first launch might seem daunting, and without knowing if you’ll enjoy it or not it’s unlikely you’ll want to make the effort. So, here’s a guide for the uninitiated, with my own experiences of the recent Starcraft 2 launch in London providing examples along the way.

If I were to mention the ominous acronym ‘MMO’*, most will immediately recall the all conquering World of Warcraft (WoW). At the last count WoW had over 12 million active players. Computer games are, for many, a form of escapism. They are a place where gamers can go to step away from the rigours and stresses of the everyday and witness some pure enjoyment within the fantastical.
